Overview of the Risk/Needs Assessment Instrument:

The Global Risk Assessment Device

The Ohio State University has developed the Global Risk Assessment Device (GRAD) in order to assist youth-serving professionals in making recommendations and referrals that are based on reliable and valid information about risk factors in 11 different domains (prior offenses, family/parenting; peers; substance abuse; education/vocation; leisure; accountability; personality/behavior; psychopathy; traumatic events; health services).

The eleven domains of the GRAD were built to measure potential threats to adolescent well-being. There are 132 items on the youth, adult and professional versions of the assessment. The complete assessment takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes to administer.

Who does the GRAD assess?

The GRAD measures the youth level of risk.  There is a youth version for ages 11-19, a professional version for social workers, court staff, etc., and an adult caregiver version of the GRAD instrument. Users have the option to collect assessment information with the youth only, the parent only or collect multiple perspectives. When administering the professional version or the adult version of the assessment, the user is asking the adult caregiver and/or professional about his or her perceptions of the adolescent’s risk level.
